When you get a Friday or Saturday night off to spend with someone special, you probably want to go on some kind of adventure together. A good date night isn’t the time for a serious drama. You want a movie that is a little sexy or scary — something to bring you closer to that person you’ve been thinking about all week.
Here are the great date night movies to see in theatres this weekend and over the coming weeks.
The Biggest Little Farm
Maybe you’ve been in a relationship for a while and you need some reassurance that you can get through the hard times and that things are generally OK out in the world. If that’s the vibe you’re after, look no further than this wonderfully warm documentary about a couple that buys a farm because they made a commitment to their rescue dog (for real) and all the difficult and amazing things that happened afterward. Just don’t see this one after moving to a new apartment, because THE BIGGEST LITTLE FARM will make you want to ditch the city for a greener life. (May 17)
John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum
Once upon a time, a no-nonsense action movie like those of the JOHN WICK series might not have passed muster as a date movie. Now, thanks to the near-universal appeal of Keanu Reeves, not to mention the strangely perfect combination of high-octane gunplay and real emotional connections, the assassin John Wick can be your concierge for an excellent night out. Haven’t seen the other movies? No problem, we got you. Two movies ago, some bad guys killed John Wick’s dog, and John reacted … violently. Now, even though he’s got another dog, the actions set in motion continue to define his life. (May 17)
If you’re going to spend an evening with someone special, why not season the date with nostalgia? Will Smith stars as Genie, Mena Massoud plays Aladdin, and Naomi Scott is Princess Jasmine in this live-action version of Disney’s classic 1992 animated film. There are new characters, more action and additional songs in the retelling of a power struggle in which the ambitious and nefarious Jafar (Marwan Kenzari) attempts to overthrow the Sultan of Agrabah, but is countered by the Sultan’s daughter, Jasmine; her suitor, Aladdin; and a powerful, strange and blue Genie. (May 24)
Annabelle Comes Home
We always want to give you the classic arm-clencher option, and this expansion of THE CONJURING series fits the bill perfectly. Not that you need to have seen the two CONJURING movies or the two previous films featuring the deeply creepy doll Annabelle. While the Warrens (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) lock Annabelle away to keep her from creating supernatural problems, the doll cannot be contained, and soon she is leading a host of evil spirits to torment 10-year-old Judy Warren (Mckenna Grace) and her friends. (June 28)
